General documentation tips. Cover depends on your policy wording: sudden backups are treated differently from gradual pipe failures and wear and tear.

Document

• Photos and short video of any overflow, backup or damage before anything is cleaned up.
• Note which fixtures were affected, when it started and whether a cleanout or inspection chamber showed sewage.
• Keep receipts for emergency clearing, drying and anything you replace.

Claim

Notify your insurer as your policy requires. A drain cleaning provider can describe technical findings; they do not replace your claim or give legal advice.
